Videos and QR codes in the Library
I started this by looking at how a few libraries/librarians used YouTube.
First was the UnquietLibrary (https://www.youtube.com/user/theunquietlibrary/videos). I watched "How to Embed a Voice Thread or Prezi..." (youtube.com/watch?v=mipDakS7yjo) and "PowerPoint How To Basics" (youtube.com/watch?v=CFlaZyGa2vo). Both were very useful instructional videos that were easy to follow.
Next was Pikesville HS library (https://www.youtube.com/user/pikesvillehslibrary/videos). I watched "Pimp my Binder" (youtube.com/watch?v=Xg_MQe5zGn4&t=264s) If all the videos I found this the most useful. It was a student led video giving step by step instructions on getting your binder organized and easier to use, whereas the other videos I found could be easily Googled. I also watched "Senior Party in Library" (youtube.com/watch?v=cTqy_KdeAPc). This one was confusing because I did not see the purpose of the video, unless I missed something.
Finally I watched BBMS Media (https://www.youtube.com/user/bbmsmedia/videos). The first video was a song parody reminding students to return overdue library books before the end of the year (youtube.com/watch?v=ylpc4Hnj_HU). This would probably be most entertaining to students as it was not limit student led but used a song they would recognize too get the message across. The other video, "How to create a book citation" (Youtube.com/watch?v=mdrCb_hHuDI) was very useful as properly citing is important, and it also uses a tool (NoodleTool) that works be very helpful to students.
These videos have me plenty of ideas to use in my own library. I can create "How To" videos, promote library functions, have students review books, review procedures (such as responsible computer use) and promote student achievement related to the school.
After YouTube, I checked out Animoto, which is a tool you can show students to craft various presentations. I used it to create a (very rudimentary) book trailer. I did the book IT by Stephen King as it is one of my favorites:
"They were seven teenagers when they first stumbled upon the horror. Now they are grown-up men and women who have gone out into the big world to gain success and happiness. But the promise they made twenty-eight years ago calls them reunite in the same place where, as teenagers, they battled an evil creature that preyed on the city’s children. Now, children are being murdered again and their repressed memories of that terrifying summer return as they prepare to once again battle the monster lurking in Derry’s sewers."
Here is the QR code for my Animoto book trailer:
1. To promote the library and its resources
2. An easy way to contact librarian rather than using email
3. Scavenger hunts to help familiarize patrons with the library and its resources
4. Contests that promote library usage
5. Checking in. Better than a sign in sheet so teachers know that students they sent actually arrived and when.
As we are becoming more and more technology based, these are all great ways to stay up to date and keep students invested in the library program.
