Bearwalker

Plot Summary: Baron, a self-proclaimed "Native American midget"is an average 8th grader, other than his stature (14). On a class camping trip, he quickly becomes suspicious of their "guide" a man that looks native, but clearly isn't. A series of events deepen his suspicions, and it seems only Baron is aware of the pending doom.  When evil becomes apparent and his suspicions of the guide are confirmed, Baron attempts to seek help, and encounters a bear family, who will shortly come to his rescue. 

Critical Analysis: Bruchac uses simple yet vivid language to tell a story that mixes Native American lore with modern life. Several native words are used throughout and given explanation, which aids its authenticity.  The pictures, though few, are effective and support the story line. Bruchac frequently uses the word "Indian" which initially was concerning. In an interview*, he explained that the term has been  used so much, most Native Americans have accepted its usage, but that remains questionable. He also addresses the stereotypical look of the Native, noting that it is what most whites expect, but is not the reality (49). Overall, it was a great mystery for young readers.

Connections:

Use in a middle school English class in a unit on folklore and mythology.  After reading, have students create a Venn diagram comparing another mythological creature to the description and lore of the Bearwalker.

Boy Meets Boy

The cheerleaders ride motorcycles into the gym. The quarterback is a drag queen. He hates his ex-boyfriend and wants nothing more than to move on.  And when he meets Noah, he thinks he has.  But when Paul makes a stupid mistake, he needs to decide what's really important to him, and what he can do to fix things with Noah.           Critical Analysis: Regardless of sexuality, any teen reader can relate to this book.  Gossip, ex-boy/girlfriends, high school drama, a broken heart and stressed frienships are all things teenagers go through. The Book Thief

ISBN: 9-780375-831003 Plot Summary: Just before World War II ,  on a train ride with her mother and brother, Liesl loses her brother.  At the end of the ride, her mother leaves her with a foster family as she can no longer care for her.  This is when the book stealing starts. Often, it is the books that save her and keep her moving forward. Then she meets Rudy, a boy her age from school, and they begin stealing more than books. She soon learns that her foster parents, who she has grown to love, have a secret that she must help hide. Through all this, Death seems to follow her everywhere she goes, but somehow she survives.  Critical Analysis:  The story is narrated by Death, who is privy to all of the events of Liesl's life as he does seem to follow her.
